A group of Anglican and Mormon walkers were officially received at Canterbury Cathedral during Easter week 2015. The group had walked for two days on the North Downs Way through Kent and were met at the cathedral by Canon Clare Edwards, whose aunt is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were given a private tour of the cathedral and were also welcomed by the Dean during choral evensong.
The group, known as the Mormon Society of St. James, has members from England, Austria, Germany, and the United States. It was formed in 2013 when a group of friends walked to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. After a 2014 pilgrimage to Trondheim in Norway, they decided to next walk to Canterbury Cathedral. Canon Clare blessed the Society for their future journeys, praying that they might find and come closer to Christ on their ways. After Canterbury, the group walked to Dover, which is the first leg of the Via Francigena to Rome, which they hope to complete in stages over the next few years.
